Stained Glass

We are almost to end of our study on Medieval times. Today our hands on activity was to make a mini stained glass window that would "replicate" a section from a Medieval Cathedral. The process was fairly simple and took about 1 hour from start to finish.

Supplies:
1 lb-Black oven-bake clay (1 lb was plenty for 3 projects)
hard candy in assorted colors
oven proof glass pie plateRemove Formatting from selection
kitchen knife
baking sheet
toothpick
parchment paper
hammer
plastic sandwich bag
photo copied page of a design or draw your own

Step 1:
Place your design under the glass pie plate. Roll the clay into long slender tubes. Beginning at the center trace the image w/ clay. Cut pieces with your knife.

Step 2:
Join the clay tubes together w/ the tip of a toothpick smooth joints with your fingers. Make sure the finished frame is fully joined. (my children were a little lax w/ this step!) Add a small band of clay at the top for hanging.

Step 3:
Next pre-heat your oven and bake as indicated on the clay package. After baking, remove your clay from the oven and set it aside to cool. Next gently remove it from the pie plate and transfer it to a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Keep the oven heated.

**Note** I did not have parchment paper so I used non-stick spray on the baking sheet**

Step 4:
Sort your candies in bags by color. Crush the candies with a hammer into small pieces. It is not necessary to have a fine dust, just small pieces.

Step 5:
Fill the spaces with candy. Use a toothpick to help guide into small spaces. Place back in the oven and melt the candy for about 5 minutes. If there are open gaps fill with more candy and bake additonal 1-2 minutes.

Let the project cool completely.
